The Slovakian-Hungarian co-operation in projects

Strengthening the nuclear safety based on mutual confidence

Objective of the project: Informing the public continuously on the quantity of atmospheric radioactivity.

The radioactivity measuring network operated by the Meteorological Services was significantly modernized and became automatic in the past few years. It makes possible to show the so-called gamma-dose values continuously on the web-site of both the Hungarian and the Slovakian Meteorological Service. Therefore there is mutual exchange of data between the two countries. The monitoring of radioactivity resulting from radioactive particles that spread with air current over borders can be considered as means of strengthening confidence since the networks are maintained by meteorological services which are independent of the institutes operating nuclear establishments.

Contact person in Hungary: Mr. Béla Kassai and Mr. József Nagy
Contact person in Slovakia: Ing. Terézia Melicherová

Tasks to be completed in the framework of the project:

  • Safe operation of telecommunication lines ensuring data exchange, continuous maintenance of necessary softwares.
  • Harmonization of presenting data.
  • Harmonized calibration of sensors.
  • Regular evaluation of data with text in Hungarian, Slovakian and English.

Developing the nowcasting system with the harmonization of lightning detection systems

Objective of the project: A mindkét országban telepített SAFIR villámláslokalizációs rendszer működésének összehangolása az antennák jeleinek távközlési vonalakon történő adatcseréje.

Harmonization of the SAFIR lightning detection system installed in both countries, data exchange of aerial signals through telecommunication lines.
The transmission lines of energy supplying systems may be badly damaged by lightning. Observation of thunderstorm activities was possible earlier only through visual observations at the synoptic stations and later in an indirect way, through analyzing radar images. A relatively new technical equipment is the SAFIR lightning detection system that is equipped with electronic aerial sensors. Due to the fact that the safe operation of the SAFIR system is possible only with keeping several aerials simultaneously in working order, the three aerials in Slovakia in addition to the 5 in Hungary would increase the reliability of the observation on the one hand and extend the observed territory on the other

Contact person in Slovakia: Ing. Igor Strmiska, Mgr. Marian Juraąek

Tasks to be completed in the framework of the project:

The technical problems that emerged in both countries and will emerge again in the future can be solved more efficiently through common efforts. Now the transmission of data is ensured from Hungary to Slovakia. The Slovakian partner is still working on installing the aerials and ensuring data exchange.

Regarding methodological developments the two countries would join together the nowcasting project initiated by the Austrian partner

Development of forecasting methods and warning systems of heavy precipitation causing sudden flash floods

Objective of the project: Harmonizing the development of limited area forecasting models, with special regard to assimilation of radar and satellite data.
The co-operation connected with the development of the ALADIN limited area forecasting model has been existing for several years. The concrete themes are changing from time to time according to demands. In the framework of the present project the attention is concentrated to elaboration of forecasting methods of heavy precipitation causing significant flash floods. Besides ALADIN short-range forecasts the development of nowcasting methods is also important. The radar and satellite observations have significant role in nowcasting. Considering that so Hungary as Slovakia is a co-operating member of EUMETSAT the access to satellite data is on the same level in both countries

Contact person in Hungary: Dr. András Horányi
Contact person in Slovakia: Mgr. Marian Jurasek

Tasks to be completed in the framework of the project:

The development of mutual exchange of radar data has to be solved. The direct exchange of EEC Doppler radar data in Bratislava and in Budapest on RMDCN line would greatly contribute to developing warning systems of flash flood phenomena in border regions.

Harmonization of evaluation of climatological normals

The aim of the project: : Characterization of the climate in Hungary and Slovakia on the same principles

The Climate atlas of Hungary was published by the Hungarian Meteorological Service using the meteorological data from 1961-1990 standard. It is a resonable purpose to make the normalized climate for the whole territory of both countries on the basis of a unified data basis.

Contact person in Hungary: Ms. Ildikó Dobi Wantuch
Contact person in Slovakia: Dr. Pavel ©tastný

Tasks to be completed:

  1. The exchange of materials from the last version of atlases with special interest to the near border areas(1961 - 1990).
  2. The exchange of methodics and evaluated normals of essential elements from selected stations - temperature and precipitation.
  3. 3. Creating new climate maps using re-evaluated standards.
  4. 4. Meeting of expert team in 2003.
